HIDDEN in Erina is an allnatural artisan who is creating delicious awardwinning delights.

Mr Goaty Gelato is taking the gelato industry to new heights, and has churned out a selection of awards at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.

The team scooped gold for the banana cinnamon caramel flavour and silver for cold brew coffee, honeycomb and lavender and cacao coconut flavours.

The business has gone from strength to strength since chef Dan Hughes served up Australia’s first premium goat’s milk gelato in Bondi in 2015.

The soon-to-be father-oftwo, whose inspiration for gelato came from his childhood in rural England and Greece, moved to Green Point with his wife Julia and family in 2016.

Mr Goaty Gelato, which also produces Jersey cow gelato and dairy-free vegan sorbet, is based alongside Distillery Botanica in the old Fragrant Garden. The icy product retails in shops and cafes including Erina’s Salt Pig Deli.

Flavours are based on what is growing in the kitchen garden, and include honeycomb and lavender, banana cinnamon caramel, turmeric and orange, and honey popcorn – as well as some cheeky cocktail flavours.

“We like to keep it really simple and natural, and source fresh produce locally,” Mr Hughes said.

“Being a chef I have to use only the best fresh and seasonal produce. So we make our own caramels and sauces, and pull as many ingredients as we can from the ground.

“It’s also a bonus being able to educate children about having a quality product with real ingredients.”

In November 2017, Mr Goaty Gelato hit the streets in a refurbished 1970s vintage van which has become a hit at weddings, markets and events.

The popular business, which can be found at Avoca Markets, already has 35 weddings booked for 2018.
