A BOARDING house is set to be built in the centre of Cremorne to provide affordable accommodation in the highrent lower north shore.

The block is planned to have 20 single boarding rooms and will be located on Military Rd between Redlands and McDonalds.

The four-storey project at No. 288 has an estimated cost of just over $2 million and will see the demolition of an existing home.

A development application for what is known as a new generation boarding house has been lodged by the company DesignInc Sydney Pty Ltd.

Boarding houses are designed to provide affordable rental housing for tenants such as singles, retirees, students and young couples.

North Sydney Council is currently assessing the proposal.

It is supportive of the concept of new generation boarding houses and there are a number of other similar projects in the area.

Last year the council opened a boarding house in Wollstonecraft, in addition to its pre-existing 39 units and two boarding houses.

There is a privately-run boarding house approaching completion in Crows Nest, and there are approved DAs for two others in St Leonards and Cremorne.

“Council is supportive of the New Generation Boarding House guidelines issued by the State Government,” a spokeswoman said.

“We have made use of these controls to construct a very successful boarding house in Wollstonecraft, managed by Link Housing.

“Council studies show that in 2011 there were 3800 households in North Sydney in rental stress and 1100 in mortgage stress. Council’s Affordable Housing Strategy aims to contribute to relieving this stress.”

The architecture firm and client behind the plans declined to comment until the application has been approved.
