ART SHOW

The City of Ryde Art Society is continuing its annual exhibition this week. Artists from across Sydney have works in the display. The final day of the exhibition is Friday. Society members meet regularly at Willandra House at Ryde and enjoy workshops throughout the year.

ART SHOW

This community art exhibition is called No Place Like Home. Artists have reflected on the theme using original music, sculptures, paintings and canvas art. Community housing provider Link Housing has held the display in other parts of Sydney, and is showing it in Ryde until November 9.

THEATRE

The drama enthusiasts of The Theatre on Chester at Epping have a new play called Alfred Deakin is Afraid of the Dark. The former prime minister was the architect of the White Australia policy. The play encourages the audience to question whether Australia is fair. This is opening night.

JAPANESE ART WORKSHOP

The Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric is known as Furoshiki. Teacher Yoshi will guide participants at this workshop in the basics of the art form. Fabric will be provided or participants can bring their own. Fabric sizes should be squares of 50cm x 50cm, 70cm x 70cm and 1m x 1m. Those coming to the workshop should bring these items to practice their wrapping on: a wine bottle, two DVD cases or a book, an orange or apple. People interested should book online or call the library.

BOOK FAIR

There will be about 50,000 second-hand books, CDs and DVDs at bargain prices at this weekend fair. Suicide prevention organisation Lifeline runs its book fairs across Sydney, which have a great reputation. Proceeds go to helping people in need. Free parking permits will be available to book fair customers upon entry.

MAKE A POPPY

Remembrance Day is November 11 and many people will be paying their respects to those who have died in war. This Ryde Council workshop will help participants knit a poppy brooch they can wear as a sign of respect. The pattern, needles and yarn will be provided. Participants must be able to knit or crochet.

DIWALI STORY TIME

Children and their parents can celebrate Diwali festival time at this storytelling activity. Stories will be told in English, Hindi and Tamil. Children and their parents are welcome to come in Indian dress. This storytelling is suited to children aged up to five years.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

A female navy officer statue will be unveiled as part of this service. Commander Anita Sellick of HMAS Newcastle will speak, as will Northern Cemeteries chair John Hewson. The North Ryde RSL sub-branch is also organising proceedings. A light lunch will follow.
